Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW)
A life-long Midwesterner, Stephen’s interest in wine was sparked by a University of Iowa college roommate from California. Said roommate from California expected Professor Clyde Kohn’s geography department class on wines to be an “easy A.” It wasn’t. But a lot of wines were tasted. This early interest was fanned by thirteen years as maitre d’ at Guido’s in Des Moines’ Savery Hotel. Every opportunity was taken to go to wine country to learn from the production end or to attend tastings and seminars with notables such as Michael Broadbent, Eileen Crane and Kevin Zraly.
Stephen continued his pursuit as a sales representative for Messer Distributing and on-premise sales manager for Glazer’s Distributors of Iowa. During this time he partnered with Chef Robert Anderson and Chef Lori Dowie to select wines to pair with the cuisine for each Iowa Culinary Institute dinner. He currently teaches a class on beverages and food and wine pairing at the Des Moines Area Community College.
Stephen recently became involved again in the restaurant business, working at Sbrocco’s on Court Avenue in Des Moines. He also provides restaurant staff trainings, works with clients to restructure wine programs and conducts private tasting seminars.
